2 Deadlegs in Deadwood - Rapid City SD to Wyoming

Blog and photos by James Kingstone
Saturday morning I had an urgent letter to send to NY, thanks to a fine officer with an eye for missiles. We eventually found the post office in spite of directions from a local sending us to Sumatra...America, you make me weep. Feeling much better for getting urgent "business" forms posted we headed off for the famous Mount Rushmore. I love how the website says it is a free monument...just $10 to park your motorcycle. Still, it's a great piece of work and well worth the ride out there as the scenery is superb. We enjoyed an ice cream and rode Hwy 36 and 385 to Deadwood. In the heat of a sunny afternoon we ran around Deadwood like two 7 year old boys enjoying the wild west atmosphere. As we approached an Inn Don warner (on the right) walked out in full "costume" followed by the rest of the desperados and Sheriffs. These guys put on a great show and explain all about Buffalo Bill's life and his untimely death. Those guns are loud enough to compete with passing Harleys.

From Deadwood we set out for Sundance Wyoming and Garrett told me about The Devil's Tower. It was not a huge detour so I jumped at it and off we sped. Well I was amazed at this weird chunk of rock sitting in a field like some Sheffield power-plant cooling tower. A cute deer gazed at our parked bikes. A friendly police officer wanted to know all about our bikes and luggage. Two very friendly Harley riders from Saginaw Michigan asked me to take their photo. It's interesting how bikers love to compare travel tecniques. We rode on to Hulett for a motel but that weekend's rodeo meant no rooms so back we rode and headed for Moorcroft and a cute motel. Garrett sits on the steps amidst the mosquitoes...
