Yellowstone. Beyond beautiful.

There is no point in my even trying to gather a bag full of superlatives to fling over this blog. Suffice to say that our ride through Yellowstone impressed me with the fact that this area of the earth HAD to be preserved. Thank goodness the Americans saw that way back in the 1800's and took action. Thank you. The range of geological formations, rivers, lakes, mountains, trees and wildlife is amazing. The roads are good, the amenities well located and reasonably fitting with a log cabin theme, and everyone seems awed and friendly. There was one oddity just before you enter the park at Wapiti. Some huge structure that appears to have been some film set for a scifi film. Or maybe a millionaire quack with bad taste?
Garrett and I put to good use the cornering skills we honed over Bighorn and this run was quick and smooth and satisfying as a cold beer at a rugby match. 248 miles later we queued to check into a motel in Livingstone Montana. It was an unusually modest wooden sign that announced our entry to Montana. The scenery was still gorgeously alpine with a cowboy overlay. Highlights? Seeing a good reason for a traffic jam. Not some pinhead who can't steer a car in a straight line but a buffalo with total disdain for humans and their cars and cameras. Old Faithful was worth the brief wait. The forest fires left intriguing skeletons of white. The lakes were so blue. The riding was fabulous on excellent roads but the sheer beauty of the wilderness made that joy seem rather insignificant. All I can say is that I will be back to spend more time and see more places. I rather fancy horseback riding into the mountains. When they have a horse with a brake lever on it's right ear...
